Postberg Private Nature Reserve is within the West Coast National Park and is only open to the general public in August and September. The Postberg Flower Trail is a two day overnight camping trip at the height of the spring flower season. The first day is approximately 16 km and the second day 8 km with an additional optional 4 km beach walk.

Although we regard this as a slackpacking trail because you are only carrying a day pack, the facilities are basic and you need to supply your own equipment.

This is proposed as a self-catering trail, however we have added the option of a potjiekos in the evening. You will need to supply your own tent / camping equipment and sleeping gear, which will transported to the overnight site.

Highlights

  • The Postberg Private Nature Reserve is only open to the public during the months of August and September when the spring flowers are usually at there peak. The abundance of colour and variety enhanced by spectacular views make this a unique experience. Sighting of bontebok, eland, zebra and springbok are frequent and tortoises are often spotted in the undergrowth.

Day 1

15.5 km.  Approximately 7 hours including lunch stops. The trails starts at the Postberg Private Nature Reserve Gate, approximately 40 minutes drive from the entrance to the West Coast National Park. The walk follows the day hike route of the Steenbok Trail for the first 7 km, climbing up to the ridge with views over the Langebaan Lagoon, before splitting to the north and following the Lagoon shoreline. After lunch the path climbs back up to the ridge with views of Saldahna Bay and the Atlantic Coast and winds down to the coastal plain and the overnight stop at Planktjies Baai. The camp site is close to the beach and is an informal level area next to the road with a fire pit and table. The ablutions are toilet and basin facilities only, with cold water.
